BETTER SILAGE IN.

MORE MILK OUT. LESS FEED WASTED.

Three-Stage Bacterial Cascade

Safeguard 6 is a UK-designed, modern silage inoculant built for real UK forage conditions — multi-cut grass, variable DM, high buffering, and “slurry-influenced” mineral profiles.

Unlike single-speed fermentation products, Safeguard 6 uses a “cascade/relay” design: enzyme unlock → early LAB → fast pH/clean-up → buchneri stability phase. Each stage hands off to the next at the right time.

Why this matters for UK grass: In high-buffer, high-potassium grass silages, fermentation can be harder to control early and stability at feed-out can be more fragile. Safeguard 6 is designed to shorten the high-risk early window and improve stability later.

1Fast Acidification
Lactococcus lactis 1k2082

Lactococcus lactis NCIMB 30160

Drives fast lactic acid production, even in high-pH, slurry-fed or young crops. This reduces protein breakdown and ammonia content, preserves feed value, and supports a clean, controlled fermentation.

Result: More protein retained. Better silage quality. Less loss from day one.

Key Benefits

  • Supports rapid lactic acid formation and early suppression pressure against undesirable fermentation
  • Particularly valuable in wet/high-buffer crops where clostridial “slip” fermentation is a risk
  • Early control of clostridia (in combination with the other Safeguard 6 cascade strains)
  • Adds suppression pressure that can help reduce protein loss risk
  • Typical outcome ranges: faster early pH drop (~0.2–0.4 pH units faster; crop dependent)
2Strong, Reliable Fermentation
Pediococcus pentosaceus 1k2103

Pediococcus pentosaceus DSM 12834

Rapid-starter. Supports fast fermentation when conditions aren't perfect (multi-cut systems, wetter crops, variable sugar levels). Works alongside Lactococcus to maintain fermentation speed.

Result: Consistent silage quality, cut after cut.

Key Benefits

  • Early fermentation “kick-start” LAB; supports fast acidification and competitive dominance
  • Helps the clamp transition more quickly to anaerobic conditions
  • Reduces the window in which spoilage microbes can grow
  • EFSA confirms potential to improve silage preservation across all forage categories
3Early Stability & Heat Control
Lentilactobacillus buchneri 1k2075

Lentilactobacillus buchneri DSM 12856

Formerly Lactobacillus buchneri

Produces acetic acid early in the ensiling phase, controlling yeasts and moulds, reducing heating, improving stability, and protecting palatability — from clamp to feed-out.

Result: More silage eaten. Less thrown away. More consistent intakes.

Key Benefits (Day 10+)

  • Converts a portion of lactic acid into antifungal compounds (acetic acid + 1,2-propanediol pathways)
  • Aerobic stability: typical outcome ranges +48–72 hours (crop and management dependent)
  • Clamp/feed-out DM losses: typical reductions of ~3–5% seen in comparative studies
  • Helps protect intakes and reduce sorting/waste when clamps are open

This strain is one of the most researched and widely used L. buchneri strains globally, with field performance consistently matching or exceeding the documented claims.

Turn Fibre Into Milk
Xylanase enzymes

Xylanase enzymes release pentose sugars from usually indigestible fibre - fuelling beneficial bacteria during fermentation, and opening up the fibre for the cow to digest at feed-out. More energy extracted. Reduced NDF level increases DM intake potential.

Result: More usable energy, and milk or meat from your silage.

Endo-1,4-β-Xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8)

From Trichoderma spp.

Key Benefits

  • Releases extra fermentable substrate (especially hemicellulose-derived sugars)
  • Supports fibre accessibility and improved NDF digestibility
  • NDFd: +3–5% improvement (crop and management dependent)
  • Additional energy recovery: ~2–5% higher (crop dependent)

Built for UK Conditions

Safeguard 6 is formulated specifically for variable UK grass/maize/whole-crop systems and high-buffer conditions. Each strain has been individually EFSA-approved for silage use (dose/safety/conditions) and tested for compatibility, rather than relying on a “commercial blend story”.

The three-stage bacterial cascade, supported by targeted enzyme technology, addresses the real problems UK farmers face: slow early pH decline leading to proteolysis risk, clostridial risk, appetite penalties, and poor transition to the stability phase causing yeast survival, heating, and feed-out losses.

Important: Silage biology can only express its full value when clamp management is competent (chop length, consolidation, sealing, face management).
